Jacob Stockdale scores only try as Ireland earn historic win over All Blacks

• Ireland 16-9 New Zealand• Ireland see out their second victory over New ZealandBrutal does not even begin to describe the contest but, for Ireland, the outcome was as beautiful as any in their rugby history. For the first time they have beaten the All Blacks on Irish soil and not a single Kiwi can say it was undeserved. If New Zealand are still officially the world’s best team, it did not particularly feel that way at the final whistle. It made for a legendary Dublin night. New Zealand may have escaped against England at Twickenham but not this time; the world champions were hassled and harried to a virtual standstill by a home team as composed and clinical as they were physical and powerful. A solitary 48th-minute try scored by Jacob Stockdale did not entirely reflect Ireland’s compelling efforts with and without the ball. Continue reading...

Football transfer rumours: Godín or Alderweireld to Manchester United?

Today’s fluff might be heading north soonIf Thursday felt like deadline day for the British cabinet then it follows that Friday should be a little woozy, a touch mellow, spent in a fug of regret and looming fear of whatever the Bad Thing was. Fortunately The Mill only knows football and, well, have we got a never-ending stream of guilt-free tittle-tattle for you. First of all, who was José Mourinho watching in Brussels on Thursday when Belgium beat Iceland? None of his Manchester United players were involved, so does that mean he wants another nibble at Toby Alderweireld – who helped Belgium to keep a clean sheet in the 2-0 win – this January? The centre-back was by far the most obvious target out there and it is little secret that Mourinho would like to convince his superiors – a word we naturally wouldn’t use lightly – that United desperately need reinforcing in that position. Which football teams have worn most kit combinations in a season? | The Knowledge

Mail [email protected] or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU“It appears that Fulham’s kit designer is having as bad a season as their defensive coach,” muses Richard Hilton. “Fulham have worn five different kit combinations in their first five away matches of the season (red/red; black/black; blue/blue; white/black; white/white). Is this a record?”It turns out Fulham’s kit designer still has a little more meddling to do, Richard. Here’s Chris Oakley. “I can confirm that they have some way to go yet! I’ve been creating some illustrations for Rochdale AFC’s official matchday programme, The Voice of Spotland, which show they had seven kits during the 1997-98 season. Two of them used elements of a kit worn two seasons before.” Continue reading...

Impressive England thrash South Africa to reach World T20 semi-finals

• South Africa 85, England 87-3; England win by seven wickets• Shrubsole claims hat-trick as bowlers turn on the styleAnya Shrubsole started her 2018 learning that she would be the first woman featured on the front cover of Wisden for her heroics in last year’s World Cup final. Now, becoming just the second player of her gender to take a hat-trick at the World T20, she has the chance to finish it with a second major trophy in two years with England progressing to the final four after eliminating an abysmal South Africa by seven wickets with 35 balls to spare after bowling them out for 85.The achievement capped an immaculate all-round performance from Heather Knight’s side with the ball, not least from Shrubsole’s fellow seamer Nat Sciver who took three for four to make six for 15 from 7.3 overs between England’s frugal and effective openers.
